By no stretch can the Satyricon be considered the first erotic work. It can't even be considered an erotic work at all. For one thing the work is not extant; it only exists in fragments. For another thing, there are no erotic elements in the fragments that exist. There are some bawdy tales and homosexual adventures, but nothing erotic. And there is a big difference between pornography and erotica. The difference can be seen in the names themselves. Pornography literally means writing about harlots, whereas erotica comes from the stem word of the goddess of love--Eros. The main difference between pornography and erotica lies in this: erotica contains an element of sexual love that pornography lacks.
